Drawing and Sketching for Any Age
by Lawrence Edmonson

Drawing and sketching may seem like impossible
skills for someone who has never drawn a
successful picture. Many of us feel that drawing is
a talent we are either born with or we aren~t. We
tried to draw when we were younger and then
determined that we would never be able to.
However, with a little instruction and the proper
techniques anyone can learn how to draw and
sketch.

There are certain supplies that you will need before
starting to learn how to draw. You may think that
any old pad of paper and pencil will do. While this
is true for your first few tries, you will notice
immediate improvement when you have a proper
drawing pad and pencil. Be sure to get a number 2
pencil since these are best for drawing and
sketching, as well as some other quality grade
pencils and a good eraser. Don~t forget a pencil
sharpener as well.

Drawing lessons are a great idea if they~re available
to you. Most community centers should offer
lessons at a reasonable price. You don~t need to
take a lot of classes to see a huge improvement in
your drawing. Getting a professional to give your
tips and advice is a surefire way to get the basic
drawing and sketching techniques down pat. While
books on drawing will certainly give you similar
advice, nothing beats personal guidance. Your
pictures will look amazing in no time.

Finding subjects for your drawings may seem
difficult when you are first beginning to learn how
to draw. Don~t use live subjects since you~ll need
plenty of time to get your dimensions right and you
don~t want to feel rushed. Also stay away from
flash photography pictures. These pictures lack
depth and can seem very flat which makes it very
difficult to draw a realistic picture. If you can~t
seem to find any good pictures check at your local
library for a drawing and sketching book since most
will have some samples for you to use.

If you have questions about drawing or sketching,
or would like to speak with other beginners, try
joining a chat room or message board. There are
many groups on the Internet that are passionate
about learning how to draw and sketch. Many
boards also have resident experts who can answer
any questions that you may have. There are also
websites that offer free newsletters full of helpful
tips and tricks.

Anyone can learn how to draw and sketch, no
matter what your age is. It will take some time, so
be patient, but you~ll be surprised at how quickly
your skills will improve. Even those of us who
have sworn we could never draw more than a stick
man can be drawing realistic pictures that we are
pleased to show our friends and family.
